Dean Mitchell

Dean Mitchell has been called a “Virtual modern-day Vermeer,” by New York Times art critic, Michael Kimmelman. R. Crosby Kemper Jr., founder of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, has also named him a “Best Bet” for collectors in ARTnews. Recognized as one of the finest painters in America, Mitchell has received over 400 awards including the T.H. Saunders International Artists in Watercolor Competition in London, England, American Watercolor Society Gold and Silver Medal, Allied Artist of American Gold Medal in Watercolor and Oil, Thomas Moran Award from the Salmagundi Club in New York, Loa Ruth Spring Award from the National Watercolor Society, The Award of Excellence Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition. Mitchell knew he wanted to be an artist at a very early age, purchasing a set of oils at the age of twelve. He won two awards for his oil painting in the very first art competition he entered. It was while attending the Columbus School of Art and Design in Ohio that he began painting in watercolor. Mitchell’s career began to take off once he started entering his paintings in competitions regularly, and his uncanning ability to make the seemingly ordinary appear extraordinary, gained immediate attention and rewards. In fact, Dean Mitchell has won hundreds of awards for his art, including first prize at the T.H. Saunders International Artist and Watercolour Show in London, the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, the Gold Medal of Honor from the American Watercolor Society, and the Arts for the Parks 1999 Juried Exhibition $50,000 Grand Prize. His paintings can be found in such museum collections as the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, St. Louis Museum, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Margaret Harwell Art Museum, Hubbard Museum, Mississippi Museum of Art and the Arkansas Art Center. Mitchell received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Honorary Masters Degree from Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio. He currently resides in Florida with his family.
